It is a lot of work, and I think it's important to choose before doing two things becomes a problem and you become unable to do either one of your two 'jobs' as well as you should.Veronica Sardonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00541599265877431197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-71961901333441809.post-54859278245557038752016-03-05T13:58:31.262-08:002016-03-05T13:58:31.262-08:00I juggled between two jobs for almost 4 years and ...I juggled between two jobs for almost 4 years and I was totally burnt out at the end of it. I was always on duty and I started cutting corners in my day job, as a result. Now I am dedicating full time to freelancing but there are still times when I miss the safety and coziness of a desk job. The important thing is to keep appreciating the FREE part in the word 'freelance' and don't be too scared when the frenzy eventually fades out and you slip into a calmer routine.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-71961901333441809.post-89570705170013332502016-02-13T07:41:28.950-08:002016-02-13T07:41:28.950-08:00Hi Rachael. I think the point is to bear in mind that you will need to put some money into growing your business and that, while not all investments will work out, it will be very hard to grow without investing. CAT tools and CPD are obvious examples. My experience at two ATA conferences has been fantastic and definitely worth the money. The conference has brought in a couple of clients, but more than that it changed my mindset completely, so I highly recommend it. I hope that helps!Veronica Sardonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00541599265877431197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-71961901333441809.post-42566378539086989982016-02-09T09:06:41.151-08:002016-02-09T09:06:41.151-08:00Veronica, was the "particular 100-dollar inve...Veronica, was the "particular 100-dollar investment" a ProZ.com membership? I really liked the approach of taking charge of one's career and seeking to actively steer it to wherever one actually wants to go, rather than sit back and wonder why things don't just happen. Of course, things may in fact not happen according to plan, but deciding where one wants to go and choosing a route to get there are surely key responsibilities for any serious freelancer.

Point taken on the ethics issue, of course. We really appreciate it and are happy to hear that you find our advice helpful. Beyond the reasons you list, we also think that as linguists we have an ethical obligation to decline projects we aren't qualified for. Just like a family law attorney wouldn't tackle immigration law or a securities issue, translators who specialize in, say, marketing translations, should do a patent translation -- because they are not qualified and it's not fair to the client. Just another bit of food for thought.

@Else: Yes, you can do it! Stick to your specialization. Just say no to things you are not qualified to do or even those you don't feel comfortable doing. It's the ethical and professional thing to do. :)Judy Jenner and Dagmar Jennerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15991071510108619107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-71961901333441809.post-6911371390500408382013-11-18T16:08:57.279-08:002013-11-18T16:08:57.279-08:00Thank you, Kasia! As for sharing, I know there are quite a few newcomers who read my blog, and I thought your interview was exactly the kind of thing that can make a difference when you are starting out. Not that I don't think veterans would enjoy it, but sometimes it's hard to get some perspective when you are starting out, and looking at a long career like Chris's is great to give you a sense of what life (rather than a year or two) as a translator may be like.Veronica Sardonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00541599265877431197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-71961901333441809.post-45459982235412379772013-11-18T01:00:00.137-08:002013-11-18T01:00:00.137-08:00Hi Veronica,

The idea that "the market is saturated with incompetent translators" is one I have devoted some thought to and will probably write a post on myself soon. Translators tend to winge a lot about that, but I prefer to think that there are two different markets out there, and incompetent translators do not really concern me: like you, I'm in this business with the determination to be, one day, as good as the best of them, and the people who do poor work for a pittance do not concern me except as a reminder of what I definitely do not want to do.
